#1 darkblade101 What length driveshaft for 302/c4 77 mav
I have a 77 2 door 302/c4 i bought to restore,it has had a vibration when you accelerate ever since then.I was changing the u joints hoping that was the problem when i put the front yolk in all the way i had to pull it out a bunch before it reached the rear end.I grabbed the front yolk and i can move it up and down quite a bit and it seems there isnt much of the yolk in the back of transmission.Theres atleast 3 inches or more it could go in the transmission.

Nothing on this car is original , the guy i bought it from used parts from any vehicle he could, to make it run.The driveshaft in it is small arround , i used to have a 73 2 door 302/c4 and its driveshaft was bigger and had a different front yolk on it, this one has a round balancer on the front the 73 didnt.

The driveshaft measures 45 1/2 from center u joint cap to center u joint cap , the yolk is 6 5/8 from center u joint cap to end , 28 spline. I am not sure on the driveshafts diameter but i am guessing the smallest one for ford because it is very small.

I have a 71 2 door 6/3 speed manual parts car i am going to check the length of the driveshaft and the length of the yolk and spline.I am really thinking this is my vibration when accelerating , it stops when i let off.But any advice would be great thanks.

I fought the same problem for years, what you need is from bottomed out at your yoke to where it seats on your U joints is between 1 1/4"- 1 1/2" also you might want to change your tailshaft bushing and measure your yoke to make sure its not wore to much, I ended up running a FOX Mustang drive shaft which helped a whole lot then I bought a Ford Racing aluminum shaft and vibrations are a thing of the past, Good luck with it.

Jeff, can you explain that again for the dense? (i.e. me) Because I just didn't understand it. :-)

Thanks , i knew that the yolk should be just barely out of the transmision not 3-4 inches , i will take your advice on the 1 1/2 inch thats what i thought.i will check on a foxbody driveshaft ,thanks .

You know, when you slip your driveshaft yoke into the transmission as far as it will go and then you slide it back to put your u joint cups to the rear end, that distance between fully forward and rear u joint installed should be around 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 inches, that allows enough clearance for things to move around especially on a leaf spring car, cars like FOX mustangs dont need as much clearance because they are control armed and dont move around as much.

Your welcome, Ive heard several people say that the FOX shafts were to short for they're cars, I'd measure carefully, honestly I think it has more to do with the diameter than anything, the FOX shafts are much larger, I'm also running a 9 inch rear which has a slightly longer pinion yoke but I dont think its more than 1/4" longer.

Okay... That's what I was thinking, but couldn't get it out in writing, so I just left the question. :D. Thanks Jeff.
