so, as some of you may know, I had been polishing the steering wheel I made, thought it was ready to turn over to the upolstery guy to get wrapped,...he said he couldnt do it as it was and mentioned how it could be done to be able to wrap it.

so I hand made cherry wood for the grips today, so now it can be finished,...its almost a shame to wrap the cherry with leather.

I've known Jim for almost 30 years. hes done some things for me in the past, never had any problems.
I dont know if your dad was needing a full interior job or not, I know he's usually booked about 1 1/2 years ahead.
Message created at 02/04/10 10:54 PM

It was a full interior job on this car.

Scheduled way in advance and kept in contact regularly. Broke promises over and over and brought in new jobs ahead of his. Dad's car was a convertible version of the car he had when he and Mom married. They took it on their honeymoon on Route 66 to California. They had plans to duplicate the trip in the new car, but McFall screwed that up and another summer came and went . Joel at Boss Custom interiors did the car (and did a great job). Mom died suddenly the next spring and their trip was not to be. Dad eventually sold the car because he couldn't get past what happened.

sorry to hear about all the run around Jack. I've never had Jim do a full interior for me, but the stuff I have had done has always been very quick and had no complications involved at all.
I know there are alot of very good upolstery shops out there, McFall is very close to me distance wise. it probably doesnt hurt that I've known him since I was a teen (from my earliest car club days, I joined about as soon as I could drive )(back then his daughter was in the same club as well as her husband{they met in the club})

(alot of my involvement in that club influenced alot of what I am able to do today)(I was 16 and hanging around guys in their 30's that all had super nice cars, learned alot!

ok, theres my public service message for the day- kids get involved with your local hotrod clubs, great experiances to be had!

while I've already sort of derailed my own thread- that last post got me thinking about some other people that I would not have got to know without being so immersed in the car scene when I was younger.

many as it has turned out are nationally known.

M.K.John for one- great guy! he was sort of a semi local legend when I was a kid, I always wanted to have something nice enuf for him to stripe when I was younger, I finaly did in 85.
hes an incredible artist and pinstriper. he did last years art for the mcg shirts. come to find out he'd been inducted into the hotrod/custom hall of fame .and has designed a Ridler award winner in the past.he's sinced moved from Iowa to Misery, montgomery city I belive.
last thing I had done for me was a concept drawing of my currant project

today's dilemma....

so,...here's my latest mess, not really new, but I'm further along so I am working toward getting a few more parts made, so this pile will hopefully someday fire.

since I have no room to run a conventional distributor, I had initially planned to do a DIS system.ok, all well and good. now... in order to do this I need to make a cam sync , I have a drive spud to run off the front of the cam.which leaves me with how to make this sync unit.
I talked with a guy today to help get some ideas.which left me with even more questions

so, now its down to two similar routes to perform the same function in essence.

Route 1) continue with the cam sync route, I would have to fabricate/machine a cam sync, buy 8 coil packs on be on my way (this was the initial plan)

Route 2) fabricate/machine a front drive distributor to run off the cam, buy 1 coil, buy a MSD box

so, making the cam sync or distributor will be pretty much the same, the difference between 8 coil packs and 1 coil is approx 150 bucks, but then I would also need a msd unit , regardless of which route, I still have to buy the F.A.S.T. unit....so I'm kinda leaning towards not having another "box" when the F.A.S.T. unit will do it all

any thoughts?

I have a crank trigger, but in order to run the coil packs I also need a cam sync. the FAST unit will run everything if I go that route, or I fab a dist to run off the cam, plus have to buy a msd unit along with the FAST unit.

so, its never just a simple plug and play

a few other little pieces made,...

been working on making the head rest, I have the supports made ,and the backs, I'm pretty happy with how they are coming out  just need to do a few more steps and those are complete and headed to an upholstery shop.

found a local solution to my cam sync issue  Tony Stewart is going to help me fab one up in his shop. no not that Tony, but it is funny that this Tony has a stock car shop. and has been racing way before the other tony was around.

motor is back in, threw the headers and tips on it so I can place the mufflers, weld the required pipe onto them, and get it all off to the coaters.

almost forgot,I have to weld the blower restaint tabs onto the header flanges before coating them, so thats on the to do list as well for this week.

also in the process of making the puke tank for the burndowns, and then will machine a couple of holes in my nice valve covers

I wanted to finish the complete exhaust before putting in the last pieces of the floor so I didnt have to crawl under :p.

about time to hang the pedal and steering column, and mount the throttle pedal.

well,.... the brake mess is taken care of, mounted and fits well. had to have the pushrod turned and threaded another 1.5 inches so I can lop some off to fit it. finished the throttle mounting today,..now I have to do order my 7ft long cable  yes 7 ft. it has to run along under the motor , then up to the injector hat...only way that would work out. even the so called "problem solver" pedals wouldnt work, since the engine is in the way . anyway...it'll be a nice clean installation:thumbsup:

Don't want to go off topic, but that reminds of a piece I saw for sale in a race car shop when we were picking up parts for my brother-in-law's stock car. It was a box with the sides all swiss-cheesed. Guess what it was?.............................A ballast box for holding lead weights!:rollinglaugh:

another bout of headscratchin' ended up with a little bit of satisfaction (I think)

I had formed the piece of the floor pan for the throttle pedal,... checked clearances,.... looked fine, but I wasnt happy with the position. got to looking into different pedal arrangements,... nope,... the one I have is basically the only one that will work without a major rework of a lot of factors.

fast forward another day or so,...I get out the crayons and a few other worthless things I call tools, measured again(ok,...5 times) yep, gotta stay with what I've got. decided to revamp the part I just made,...do some rough figuring, cut down the new part into a "new", new part, clearance that.... trial fit(again, multiple times) sit back in it,.... yep,.. gained some leg room , and that equals more room for better control.and as a side note looks better asthetically

now,...I have a partial day off tomarrow to play, hoping to get a few things buttoned up,.... figure out which cable end for the pedal....(only needing a 72 incher :) ) need some throttle return springs for the bird and a serrated double arm. will order a few misc things to go with.

vroom vrooom :rollinglaugh:

yes, I've done part of them,... I had waited to finish them up so that I could complete a few odds and ends without having to crawl under the car. with them out I could reach thru

the last part was making sure the throttle linkage/pedal assembly was going to work and look like I wanted. since that seems to be in order I can close it all up

I had to modify the last part I made for ease of maintainance on down the road. I made an access panel to help hook up the throttle cable and pedal assembly. I could have gotten by without it, but it would have required an extra set of hands(which arent always avalible).
so I took " able to work on it myself" route... a little extra work now, makes it easier later on

So true. On the mid 1970's Ford LTD's/Galaxie's (the BIG cars), in order to change the heater motor, the Ford Service Manuals instructed how to cut a hole in the passenger side innner fender in order to access the fan motor. A plate was sold to cover the hole. Doh!!

Message created at 11/18/10 09:04 PM
#132 rabidcustoms RE: its official
wheee :p

after finalizing sketches, then making templates, and so on, I figured I'd made enuf templates to get me going in the right direction so I started forming parts. I dug thru one of my old tool boxes and found some small tab brackets that will work great for mounting the new dash in place (once it gets to that point)
also drilled and tapped a few more mounting points.

little brown truck had to make a repeat visit and bring me one more part so I could advance.(drop bracket)

I mounted the column to see how that whole mess works, didnt like the angle so I altered it a few degrees. now its muy better :P also the 1st time I'd sat in the car, and turned the wheel having the column completly secured- pretty cool!

so both the tilt and the swing away work as they should.

roughly marked the shifters position with the steering and seats in, and it all feels pretty darn good.

1st parts of the new inner door panels are in place( yes, I cut out the entire inner door as well),....I think its gonna be really cool.

1 of 2 end panels are formed. I have a couple of difficult areas coming up to form, but once I figure a way to go about that it should progress much quicker.

all in all..... I'm feeling good about it.

wheeew, break time for me,...dinked around for over 4 hours today making, then getting the bracketry in place.

cut, :weld: , then repeat seemed to be the standard for a bit. I finally pieced together a makeshift jig to lay it all out straight, that helped alot .
so now I have the basis to proceed forming the main sections. :)

yes, I have been working on the car. yes, there is progress being made. the dash is really taking shape now, I managed to get the main part all hammered out and its looking pretty good. its been pretty time consuming trying to make it all symetrical and even, and flow the way I want it too.
so, slowly getting there.

Hanna or the Mustang? Hanna has been interested in helping here and there when we have time, and has had fun with the projects we've done on it together. she also has a creative eye and gets where I'm going with things. unfortunately she'll be headed back home in a month.

got a little done today,...

layed out where everything goes, marked where to start drilling, and even found all the right sized hole saw bits (a feat in itself )

re- figured the capacity of the cell, about 12.3 gallons, not huge but its about all I had room for. and after the gauge reads empty, I'll still have about 3 gallons in reserve.

not ideal, but its better than running the system dry, plus with the potential fuel milage, better to have a bit extra than to see it read empty then get another block and run out.

ok, ok, back on track,....was welding some aluminum today, had a ball of it drop down and onto one of my semi new shoes,.... :banghead: burnt a hole thru the lace and tongue, got the shoe off just as it went thru my sock, but saved my foot....Marcy only wanted to know why I wasnt wearing my "garage shoes" (as in-old worn out shoes)

Yep ouch indeed, i have done that and it hurts like Hell. I really like when the little molten ball of spatter rolls down your leg and acts like a snow ball rolling down a hill getting bigger as it goes till it cools on your skin and stops.
Aw ........ sorry.......... brings back some painful memories.:slap:

odds and ends...

worked on the cell a bit this weekend, decided I'm going to give it a full polish job, just because.

did some measuring and trying to figure out the best route for a radiator.

also, on one of the parts, I need to figure out if I want to do mild steel or aluminum? its a partial belly pan would be the best way I could describe it... I'm leaning towards aluminum but have a sheet of mild steel I could use and would probably do some custom forming with some dies I already have,.... if I do aluminum I want to do some flare punch work in it..... hmmmn

....and of course I dont have the flare punches I would need

well, after some more thought, a fully polished fuel cell wouldn't look right and wont quite fit the overall look I was going for ,.... so I did a scotchbrite finish,.... that was still to shiney, went to 220 grit,....nope,..shiney, 180,....not quite....

ok,..so I'm going with a 150 grit finish on it,...still bright but has the right matte sheen to it that I think will look better overall.
