Articles - Adding a 302c.i.

I have compiled a list of information on adding a 302 from my messeage board and personal trial and error. Here we go!!!

Please add any info you can.

1) You need to get the 302 motor mounts to the chassis for a Maverick.

2) I6 radiator will work with the 302.

3) You need early model exhaust manifolds or headers made for the Maverick. I used Hedman Headers for a 73 302 manual steering: I called JEG'S tech support (1-800-345-4545 or www.jegs.com)

4) The C4 from a 250 will bolt right to the 302. The C4 from the 170 or 200 will also bolt up the the V8 (using the V8 flexplate, of course).

5) Not absolutely necessary, but the transmission crossmember for a V8 has double humps for dual exhaust. Without it you must kink the pipe.

6) The V8 cars had a crossmember from the engine, connecting the framerails by the engine mounts to strengthen the frame.

7) The alt. housings are identical so it bolts right up to the V-8's factory brackets, also the wiring harnesses are the same.

Commets from other Maverick Owners:

Basically all you need are the motor mounts, the motor to chassis mounts(which bolt in with no modifications),a V-8 tranny, and the tranny cross-member(this had to be notched slightly because the tranny tunnel on a 70 is a little narrower than later ones). I don't remember if you also have to change the drive-shaft, I did only because my donor car's shaft was "beefier". The radiators were the same. I used headers for a maverick with a V-8. The alt. housings are identical so it bolts right up to the V-8's factory brackets, also the wiring harnesses were the same. Sorry I don't know about p/s or a/c mine didn't have them. The only other thing you would need(if memory serves me correct) is a distributor. Everything fit like it was meant to be there from the factory. It took all of about 7 to 8 hours from start to finish, including lunch, and tranny-drive shaft swap.
